Meet Certified Automotive Detailer & Paint Correction Specialist, Michael Dowdy of Auto Detailing HQ

Like many successful automotive detailers, Michael Dowdy developed his fascination with cars at a very young age, and that passion only intensified over the years.

Born in Lake Charles, LA and having lived in Baton Rouge and New Orleans, as a young man, Michael found ways to soup up his cars, so they looked sportier, faster, and were always pristine clean. He eventually made that predictable turn many car enthusiasts make – that is to trade in his torque wrench for a power buffer, and focus on shiny paint more than the mechanical, grease-monkey side of the industry.

His love for cars however, had little to do with a career at the time. Moving to Charlotte, NC at age 23, the money was too good to turn his back on opportunities in the engineering and construction industries where he worked for 11 years as a piping designer on oil and gas refineries and on nuclear power plants.

In 2016, having made enough money to walk away, Michael spent some time with technology, looking at ways to build a marketing and Search Engine Optimization (SEO) business where he could self-promote his own automotive detailing business – Auto Detailing HQ.

Seeking Professional Certifications & Training from “Detailer of Air Force One.”

In 2016, Michael moved out into Austin’s suburbs to Leander and with detailing now his profession rather than a life-long hobby, his background in engineering and technology told him instinctively, there was a lot more to cleaning a car than just washing it and waxing it.

Living in an upscale community like Leander and Cedar Park, he foresaw a way to provide high-end automotive detailing services to the residents in and around Austin. Using his mechanical and detailing skills to work some magic on his first Corvette – a birthday present to himself on his 30th birthday – Michael began hanging out with some detailing buddies in Baton Rouge where he did a great deal of on-the-job training for free before seeking formal training.

Michael did a lot of Internet research and two prominent figures seemed to always rise to the top – Autogeek reconditioning expert and Competition Ready TV show host Mike Phillips, and Renny Doyle with Detailing Success in Big Bear, CA.

Known as the “Detailer of Air Force One” because Renny has spent the past 15 years restoring and preserving the original presidential jet Air Force One on display at Seattle’s Museum of Flight, Michael figured anyone capable of restoring an historical icon for a major museum, was bound to know what he was doing.

Michael attended Doyle’s intense but comprehensive 5-day certified training class and discovered there was not only a lot more to detailing than cleaning a car, but Doyle had an entire national network of trained and certified detailers known as the Detailing Success Network, and a senior-level team of detailing mentors known as the Detail Mafia, who were always available to answer questions, give technical advice, and provide support across the board as he built his business.

Doyle offered his own Detailing Success certifications in Detailing Business, Paint Correction, Headlight Repair, and Double Black Inspiration Ceramic Coating, and those certifications qualified him for the 2019 Air Force One Detailing Team announced in spring 2019.

Additionally, Doyle is a Recognized Trainer with the International Detailing Association (IDA) and he could also seek his IDA certified designation, but in an advanced Skills Validated (SV) designation.

Today, Michael Dowdy provides professional automotive detailing services, paint correction services, and ceramic coating installations for car and truck owners in Northern Austin and the surrounding area.
